Jamaicans are considered to be some of the warmest people in the Caribbean. Our smiles warmer than the brilliant sunshine on a summer’s day. Of course, what you expect from a nation whose National Motto is unofficially “No Problem Man”. Actually, this is not only our motto but rather our way of life.
Why do Jamaicans say “No Problem Man”
Visitors are often puzzled by the constant repetition of the pharse” No Problem Man” that seems to come from almost all Jamaicans. They cannot understand why, when all seems to be going wrong, Jamaicans just smile. Especially, at times when anxiety levels should be rising. Jamaicans remain calm and say” No problem man”, we will help you sort it out. So what does this pharse means. We are simply saying, relax or ‘chilllax ” you are on vacation. You are in paradise forget your problems.
No we have not been smoking
Additionally, some visitors assume that the explanation for our calm demeanour and helpful disposition is probably because Jamaicans are all high. In fact, I have heard numerous times guests say that will have some of whatever my staff was smoking.
It may come as a surprise but many Jamaicans do not smoke. Our “No problem man’ philosophy of life is just part of our culture. It is part of how we interact with each other and the world . We are a calm and helpful people who consider it a privilege to serve.
Finally, One incident that comes to mind. I once had guests that rented a car and went exploring in the mountains. They unfortunately had an accident resulting in the rental running off the road. Consequently, to their amazement the entire village came to their assistance. They reportethat the farmers left the feilds, the teachers and students left the classes. The entire community united with one goal. That was to help them through their dilemma, and of course, they were reassured that it was absolutely “no problem man”
